Update Your Kitchen Cabinets Without Going Crazy

December 5, 2017

Creating a dream kitchen with painted kitchen cabinets. Tips and inspiration by decorative painting expert Billet Collins. Click through to check all the tips!

7,800 SAVES ON HOUZZ

This lovely kitchen was designed by renowned architect Barnes Vanze, built by Gibson Builders and hand painted the glazed cabinets by yours truly. Barnes Vanze has gotten over 7,800 saves for this photo alone! Imagine getting to cook dinner in this kitchen!

HOW TO

Although this was new construction, painted cabinets are a wonderful way to update existing cabinets. Options include solid paint, glazed finishes and painted patterns. All of our furniture finishes are available for painted kitchen cabinets (or bathroom vanities!). Check our custom painted samples here.

  1. PREP Prep matters a lot! Make sure to really clean your existing cabinets. We like to use eco-friendly Krud Kutter by Rustoleum.
  2. PAINT Remove the doors and either hand paint or spray primer and 2 coats of latex on each side, and on the boxes. Watch for drips. Benjamin Moore is our go-to paint. Talk with your local paint store who can tell you which of their products are best for your project.
  3. GLAZE Glaze the cabinets with your choice of finish. This French inspired kitchen was glazed with a 3 color Dragged Finish. Farrow & Ball Stone Blue is the base paint on the island. We switched it up for a more curated look on the wall cabinets and glazed them in an antique white palette, including Benjamin Moore Bone White.
  4. SEAL We’re picky about color. Oil based urethanes will yellow, so we usually use a waterbased urethane. 1-2 coats is best.

HOW LONG WILL THIS TAKE? KEEPING YOUR SANITY

The big question I usually get is “how long will I be out of my kitchen?” Estimate two weeks if you’re having it professionally painted. Longer if you’re doing this on your own.

You DON’T need to empty your cabinets if you’re only having the outside painted. Once the doors are removed you can have the inside protected with plastic.
