How To For Painted Floors

February 27, 2014

Octagonal Key Hand Painted FloorsPREPARING & CARING FOR HAND PAINTED WOOD FLOORS

Award winning painted floors is one of our specialties!  Hand painted patterns and glaze techniques are great for hardwood, softwood and cement floors.  They add architectural detail and a luxurious layer to a room, whether in softly stained colors or impactful opaque paints.  Easy to care for, beautiful design solutions and durable – these are a Billet Collins favorite.

We work in conjunction with the floor refinishing company of your choice.  Our work is sandwiched in between the first and last coats of floor sealant for long lasting durability.

THE PROCESSPainted Floors

These are few procedures that make our hand painted floors just perfect:

1. Start with your choice of floor refinishing company.  New or refinished floors should be stained as necessary and sealed with one coat of finish, by the refinishing company.

2. The sealed floors should be lightly sanded and vacuumed just before we come in to begin the decorative finish, again by the floor refinishers.

3. This is where Billet Collins begins the painted pattern.  Once we begin we ask that you do not walk on the floor!  Street shoes bring in dirt and stones that will be in the finished floors forever once it is sealed.  Bare feet leave oils on the floor that show up in the finish.  If necessary please wear socks to cross the floor.  Painted patterns are very delicate at this point and can be easily damaged.  We’re picky because we care!

4. Completed artwork should dry a minimum of 24 hours before sealing.

5. Floor refinishers will vacuum or wipe clean the entire floor before sealing, as necessary.  They will apply 2-3 coats of topcoat, in your choice of sheen

6. Allow to dry and cure according to the floor refinishing company’s recommendations.

Whether you choose an historic pattern in sheer wood tones or a colorful faux Portuguese tiled floors complete with grout lines, we like to use water based products that will not yellow.

Double check with the floor refinishing company you’re working with, but expect to clean floors with a simple damp cloth.  Regular vacuuming will keep crumbs and dirt from scratching the finish.

Protect your floors from scratches by putting felt pads on the feet of chairs and tables.

Painted floors do not collect dust or dust mites and are perfect for people with allergies or asthma.
