Live at 1:00 #8 | Classic Blue and White

April 20, 2020

It’s a beautiful day to be outside. Today, we’re enjoying lunch al fresco on the veranda with Kismet fine china in classic blue and white.

Every Occasion Is Special

As you know I’m working on being grateful and appreciating the little things in life. That includes lunch time. So, use the fine china! Use the good silver!

The one good thing about this quarantine, it has allowed me to slow down. Just setting the table has become a new routine with a ritual experience.

Easy Living With Classic Blue and White

Every day is a special occasion, so pull out the good stuff. These classic blue and white porcelain dishes are dishwasher and microwave safe, making clean up and prep even easier.

We set the table for tea and a light lunch. See how we stacked the salad plate on top of the dinner plate? The dinner plate is now used as a charger. I like the generous feel of how it fills the tablescape. We use the tea cups for a million different things, but today we’re using it for tea! Scroll down for a link to a dessert served in these teacups, below.

How It Came To Be

The dishes were inspired by a collaboration with Aidan Design for a DC Design House fundraiser. Aidan Design’s beautiful kitchen cabinets were dressed up with our hand painted dishes, and sold to benefit Children’s National Medical Center.

We liked the dishes so much we decided to create a limited edition! We took our Billet Collins patterns and color experience from our decorative painting projects and scaled them down to fit on a place setting. The salad plate boasts a pattern we painted on a large sisal rug for designer Mary Douglas Drysdale. The beads are a common motif that we use to embellish wall patterns and furniture borders. The blue and white color is a classic.

In the video clip, I mentioned that a photo of one of the border patterns was on the cover of this House Beautiful book. It’s true that we painted the sisal rug on the pictured on the book cover, but I remembered the wrong pattern!

After a lot of research, we found a company who could fire our artwork onto fine porcelain china, making the dishes more user friendly. Although a gold or silver metallic border would be stunning with this place setting, we stayed away from that to make sure the dishes could be microwave safe. Smart, right?

Living With Beautiful Things

Dr. Aziza Shad at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital said that her patients healed better when they were convalescing in a well designed space. That philosophy has stayed with me.

I believe that surrounding yourself with art leads to healthy living. Even simple things like a beautifully laid table, or hand painted dishes.
