You’ve found the perfect table and chairs. The window treatments are gorgeous. But what about the walls? Hmmm…How about the ethereal aesthetic of a dining room wall mural to wrap you up?
Come on in to our #wfh studio while we chat about hand painted wall murals. Here’s the back story:
We work with a lovely designer from Capital Black Book who came to us with a a beautiful dining room. The problem was it had 3 doorways and was feeling a bit lost. It was more of a pass through. To create more of a destination, she wanted a landscape mural with a soft, painterly aesthetic. Something to pull guests into the room that would evoke a meaningful experience. She had a list of items that she’d like to have in her mural. Tokens and scenes that were personal to her and the family. We were happy to oblige.
MAKE IT MEANINGFUL
A custom mural allows you to make it as personal as your heart desires, giving it more meaning. Our homeowner was fond of birds and the Eastern Shore of Maryland. So we incorporated seagulls, herons and pheasant. The ruins of an old stone building were included as the backdrop to her children and dogs playing in the fields.
THE SET UP
A lot of thought goes in to the design of a wall mural. Smart interior designers know to start the conversation with floor plans, paint chips and fabric swatches. These design tools help us hit the ground running. Because the designer had all of this and her list of must-haves in the mural, we were able to get the sample back to her quickly.
PAINT COLORS
We achieved this soft mood with just the right colors with Farrow and Ball Paints’s French Gray, Green Blue and Borrowed Light. [Farrow and Ball Paints]
Do you see her red chairs? Maybe I should call them persimmon, they aren’t quite red, are they? We added a sprinkle of that color as berries and accents in the wall mural to marry the two elements.
CANVAS OR NOT?
There are two options for wall mural art. A mural can be painted on canvas and hung like wallpaper. There are a few reasons why this is a great choice. The texture of the canvas is pretty cool and makes for a very artistic feeling. Painting on canvas also means we are in the house for a shorter period of time. Just to hang the art rather than painting the whole thing on site. So it’s less invasive. Lastly, a canvas mural can be shipped anywhere. So we can do the art in our studio and roll it on a tube, ship it and have it installed by a mural hanger on location.
The other choice is to paint the mural directly on the walls. This avoids the added step of hanging the art and no seams or touch up. And you get to enjoy having an artist in your home!
