How To Care For Your Canvas Floorcloth

June 28, 2012
With a new flurry of canvas floorcloth requests, I’ve updated our care instructions which go home with every new floorcloth.  I included some interesting (at least I think so) history and tidbits.

Congratulations to you who are proud owners of a one-of-a-kind, made-just-for-you, piece of art for your floor.

Canvas floorcloths date back to the 1700’s and were popular until the 19th century when synthetic flooring was introduced.  Since then, hand crafted goods have made a comeback and canvas floorcloths are enjoying a revival.

Floorcloths can be used in any room of the home or commercial space.  They are designed to be used on hard surface floors and should not be installed over carpeting or uneven surfaces.  We use only heavy duty cotton canvas, which is stretched and painted by hand using water based paints and glazes.  No VOC paints are available on request.

These durable hard-wearing pieces of art should be cleaned periodically with simple soap and water or vinegar and water solutions.  Do not use heavy cleansers which may damage the finish of the floorcloth.  Our floorcloths are extremely durable and sealed with several coats of water based urethane formulated for floor use.

Protect your floorcloth from scratches by putting felt pads on the feet of chairs and tables.  Small particles can cause bumps in the floorcloth, make sure to vacuum or wipe these up.

Never fold or bend your floorcloth.   This will create cracks in the painted surface.  Always roll your floorcloth, preferably over a cardboard tube, with the painted surface facing out.

To store your floorcloth, roll with the painted side facing out.  Roll over a cardboard tube or similar object.  Secure with plastic wrap or twine.  Store in a dry area.

To install your floorcloth, allow it to come to room temperature.  Slowly unroll.  Do not force the floorcloth flat; it will flatten completely on its own as it warms up.  Carpet pads are not recommended, but the non-skid pads are fine.

Canvas floorcloths do not collect dust or dust mites and are perfect for people with allergies or asthma.
